Keltec Ks7 Review - KelTec goes big with their gun designs. They rarely do anything in the boring or ordinary category, and EC7 is a testament to that. KelTec entered the shotgun game with KSG. The KSG is a bull shot gun that uses a twin barrel design that offers twice the maximum capacity of conventional guns. The disadvantage was a large amount of weight, a complicated manual of arms, and a high price. The EC7 simplifies that with a single tube design bull shotgun.

The seven in the EC7 name gives you a clue as to how many rounds the shotgun has. Seven rounds of 12 gauge is a respectable amount of ammo for any combat shotgun. Especially when you consider how short and light this gun is. With an overall length of 26.25 inches, it is shorter than the Mossberg Shockwave but comes with an 18.5-inch stock and barrel. It also has two more rounds than the Shockwave.

A bull shotgun makes a lot of sense when you consider that shotguns work best at close range. Close combat rifles are best when they are short and light, so they can maximize maneuverability in close quarters situations. At just 5.9 pounds, the KS7 is nice and light, too.

By the numbers, the shotgun looks great, but does it hold up when we hit the range? Let's find out.

I hit the range with a range of ammo for the EC7. I brought some cheap bird shot, some standard buckshot, some Flitecontrol stuff with reduced recoil, and some Hornady slugs. Targets ranged from clay pigeons to IPSC steel targets. I started light and went heavy.

The large carrying handle of the weapon that gives a look back to a futuristic cannon serves several purposes. One of them is where you place your beat. Your sight is a large fiber optic triangle that is easy to see and very easy to use with birdshot and buckshot. With slugs, it can be complicated beyond 50 yards. The front sight is quite large, and there is no rear sight to reach those long shots with slugs.

I don't use slugs much, though, and prefer the sight to be large for quick contact with close bucks. Actually, I'd like to add an optic, specifically a red dot for quick engagement in close combat (CQB). Since the gun comes from the factory, I can't add optics. I would have to remove the carry handle and add an aftermarket fiber optic rail to do this. That's a shame because the KS7 carrying handle is pretty handy. The KS7 carry handle also provides you with M-LOK slots for mounting lights, lasers and kitchen sinks.

Review: Kel Tec K7

A light bullpup shotgun has some raw recoil, but it can be mitigated with proper recoil control. I've pushed forward and pulled back and found that it does a great job of keeping me from kicking 12-gauge ass. The action is a bit gritty, but flows perfectly. The cylinder choke does a predictable job of controlling dispersion, and the Flitecontrol rounds work perfectly with it.

The design of the holes makes it quite easy to move from target to target. It was easy to swing the gun from clay pigeon to clay pigeon while sitting on the berm because the gun has no weight in front of it. Therefore, it is easy to move with a simple change of the body and reach the goal quickly.

A shotgun and speed go well together, and it's nice to have a gun that moves quickly and hits the target reliably.

The action wears down, making it easy for lefties and righties. On the other hand, reloading is painfully slow. Reaching back and loading around can be a hassle. Bullpup reloads always draw, and the KS7 is no different in that regard. Compared to a normal tube feeding gun, it is painfully slow.

Ergonomically, it's a simple pistol with a giant push button safety and an ambidextrous pump release. It is all very well laid out. The pump has a built-in hand stop that helps keep things safe. The upside is that if you rest your thumb on that fence, it's a nice slap against your thumb. I quickly learned how to point the thumb up to avoid the thumb.

In terms of reliability, I have yet to find a standard 2.75 or three inch shell that the KS7 won't eat. Even the cheap Rio buckshot runs low copper with no issues. Unfortunately those little 1.75 inch shells don't run well in the gun, so don't get your hopes up if you like small shells.

A neat feature of the gun that I like are the round holes that appear in the magazine tube. A quick glance can help you see when your ammo count is low and you need to apply a few extra rounds to the bucket.

The EC7 brings a dose of new life to the oil pump shotgun. It's short, light, and still manages to hold seven rounds of 2.75-inch shells without issue.

I remember a few years ago going to spend time with KSG Kel-Tec and review it. I enjoyed running that double 12 gauge magazine around the range. Fun times. Fast forward to this week and I'm doing another iteration of that model: the KS7.

The KS7 is a 12-gauge bullpup shotgun and is a single-mag tube version of the KSG, but with some interesting differences. The most obvious difference is the top carry handle and the optic lip on the front. That makes the KS7 shootable straight out of the box. But it sure looks weird. Anyway, I was able to spend some time shooting the KS7 and here follow my impressions of this lightweight beast of a shotgun.

You can judge the KS7 for its small and lightweight configuration, making it a versatile, easy-to-carry, easy-to-handle firearm. Good for home defense or other awkward or close range needs. At just over 26 inches long and ~6 pounds, it's easy to hold, easy to pack, and (unlike KSG) simple to use.

You can consider EC7 for its value. Often found for less than $500, it's an inexpensive way to get a tactical shotgun with a front sight lip that makes it ready to shoot right out of the box. With multiple M-LOK slots, there are plenty of places for mounting accessories like lights and sling mounts, too.

The EC7 was easy to handle and fun to shoot... to a point. This shotgun is very light, so I felt every bit of recoil from every round I fired. With hot ammo, this little shotgun shoots like a mule. I can say with complete confidence that anyone who owns an EC7 should put on a soft pad to alleviate the hard recoil impulse. The "keypad" on this shotgun is rock hard.

One immediately noticeable improvement of the KSG over the EC7 is the feel and function of the pump action. This feels much more like the action of a traditional shotgun than the KSG action, which was rather stuffy and plastic, and prone to short shots. This action feels much nicer and the gun is easy to rotate properly between shots. Well done, Kel-Tec. The pump grip is also greatly improved over what is present on the KSG. With front and back molded stops, it's easy to keep your hands firmly in the right position. I recommend, however, not to put your thumb against the daffodil in front. When the gun fires it will give a hard glow to the thumb.

Because the KS7 is so small and the length of pull is relatively short, it's not particularly easy and comfortable to use the front lip of the sight on the odd carry handle. That said, the sight is totally doable, but of course you have to have your cheeks fully welded and face low on top of the stock to get proper alignment for accurate hits. My first shots were noticeably high, but when I found the right cheek weld and saw the entire bearing handle groove, the hits were right on.
