keltec 9mm pistol

Keltec 9mm Pistol - The Kel-Tec PF-9 is a 9mm, recoil-operated, breech-locking, double-action-only semi-automatic pistol based on (and sharing many parts from) Kel-Tec's earlier P-11 and P-3AT Is. Kel-Tech claims the PF-9 is the largest and lightest 9mm pistol ever mass-produced. It was designed as a secret and backup weapon for law enforcement and civilian concealed carry. Kel-Tec first announced the PF-9 on February 9, 2006, and the new pistol was released in the fall of 2006.

The PF-9 is manufactured by Kel-Tech CNC Industries in Cocoa, Florida. With extensive use of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) manufacturing techniques, its six main components include barrel, slide, frame, grip, trigger group and magazine. The barrel is made of SAE/AISI 4140 steel hardened to 48 RHC, and the slide is made of the same steel. The trigger group consists of a solid machined billet of 7075-T56 aluminum. A transfer rod system connects the hammer and trigger. A firing pin safety block is incorporated to prevent accidental discharge if the gun is dropped. The long, double-action-only trigger pull provides an additional safety feature. The gun includes a slide hold feature that locks the slide in the rearmost position after the last round has been fired. The frame is made of DuPont ST-8018 polymer and holds a 7-round, single column steel magazine.

Sights include a fixed front blade and a windage adjustable notch rear sight. Three white dots illuminate the scope for optimal visibility in low-light conditions, and this gun includes an additional light and laser mounting rail.

The PF-9 uses many parts originally designed for Kel-Tec's P-11 and P-3AT models, and is a compromise between those pistols. From the P-11, the PF-9 uses a slightly modified barrel, trigger, ejector and front sight. P-3AT parts used in the PF-9 include an extractor and various springs. The handle is available in a variety of colors, while the slide is available in blue, parkerized, ceramic (Cerakote) and hard chrome finishes. The PF-9 comes with an extended floorplate for magazines, an alt right for rear sight adjustment, and an instruction manual. When looking for a good example of America's most popular carry pistol, the slim 9, the Kel-Tec PF9 is a good place to start. It is the cheapest quality gun and proven performance. The Kel-Tec PF9 was one of the first ultralight 9mm pistols.

The gun has a polymer frame and a double action only trigger. The trigger is firm but smooth, breaking at 6.5 pounds. It's not a striker-fired gun, but the PF9 uses a hammer.

Unloaded weight is a light 12.5 ounces. The gun is 5.25 inches long and 0.9 inches wide. The PF9 is smaller, but has the advantage of its seven-round magazine over the six-round magazine of some smaller 9mm pistols.

When you compare the pistol to the same manufacturer's 8.5-ounce P3AT .380, which also has an overall length of 5.2 inches, the PF9 offers a significant advantage for very little extra bulk. The big difference is in power.

The 9mm Luger has benefited greatly from ammunition and projectile developments, and the PF9 may look better today than it did when it was first introduced. The gun is conventional for a polymer frame gun. The grip treatment ensures good friction and grip.

There are enough sights, and the slide is thin and easy to open. The double action trigger is quite smooth with a quick reset. The ejection port is large enough for administrative operations.

Activating a DAO trigger is very different from addressing a single-action trigger. Moving backwards and forwards after a reset requires coordination. The gun is fired and the trigger is given time to reset.

The DAO Kel-Tec is comfortable enough to hit well in the mid-range. The scope is adequate and the gun is a real pocket gun. No manual protection; The DAO trigger is a security feature. The locked bolt action is traditional. Removal is not difficult.

The PF9 illustrated has been extensively fired with a variety of ammunition. These include Federal American Eagle 124-grain FMJ, Federal Sintec 115-grain as training loads, and Hornady 124-grain KSTP+P. The interesting Hornady 100-Grain Lite is certified for reliability.

For a heavier bullet choice, the 147-grain Sig Sauer Elite V Crown was tested. All loads were fed, chambered, fired and ejected without issue. Make sure the hand is not riding the slide with this gun. Easy to do with a short 9mm slide and a common cause of failure for pistols of this size.

While I was rapidly shooting at the 7-yard range, the PF9 gave a good account of itself. The groups were large enough for personal defense, no one left the kill zone. Just like that, this gun is harder to control than a heavy gun, which is to be expected. The controls can be difficult for inexperienced shooters. Controlling the +P load in the PF9 with a firm grip on the pistol was no more difficult.

The issue of the magazine is positive in its work. It was not difficult to achieve the exercises with rapid loading. After combat shooting practice, it's a good idea to take a few long-range shots, check the zero, and check for absolute accuracy.

The DAO trigger is long but smooth and requires attention to detail. The Kel-Tec PF9 produced reasonable results, with one best group running 3 inches for five shots from a tight shooting position, including 4 inches at 15 yards.

The gun never broke down and worked reliably. This is a true 9mm pocket pistol suitable for personal defense, concealed carry and home defense. If you can carry a larger and more maneuverable gun, you should. But the PF9 is a good choice for concealed carry.
