Drivers License Fort Myers - The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles announced that Florida driver's licenses and identification cards will have a new look.

The front of the card design features a linear pastel interpretation of the Florida state seal and a large orange "FL" on top of an all-white base.

Portrait images will now be printed on a transparent background and appear in four locations on the credential.

Officials say the new design not only has a completely new look, but also includes double the fraud protection measures compared to the previous design.

The new design includes almost twice as many anti-fraud measures, including redundant data, ultraviolet (UV) ink and optically variable capabilities.

New credentials will also be issued with designated header colors indicating the type of license you hold. Licensees under 21 will have a red box on their card indicating when they will turn 21.

The new design includes symbols for sports, boating, freshwater, saltwater and lifetime hunting licenses, as well as a list of other informational symbols.

Florida's new driver's license and identification card allows sexual predators and sex offenders to be identified with a blue identifier in the lower right corner of the front of the card. Sexual predators will have "Sexual Predator" written on the card, while sex offenders will have "943.0435 FS" in that area.

From August 2017, the department will start issuing the new cards. By the end of December 2017, the new cards will be available at all Florida call centers and online.

FLHSMV says you don't have to replace your current driver's license or identification card unless it has reached its expiration date or requires a change, such as a change of name or address.

They say the old driver's license and ID will continue to be used alongside the new licenses until they are replaced or removed.

In 2021, Florida residents will be able to apply for new mobile driver's licenses easily accessible on a variety of devices, including smartphones and tablets, NBC affiliate WESH reported.

Several other states have tested digital licenses, and Louisiana has already given the green light to its digital driver's license.

In Florida, the service will be provided by the company Thales, which designs and builds electrical systems and provides services for the aerospace, defense, transportation and security markets.

According to Thales, a digital license will work in the same way as a traditional one. People would open the app and present it to verify their age, check in with the TSA, or interact with law enforcement.

However, Thales states on its website, "It will be the responsibility of each state and local law enforcement agency to determine which procedure and methods work best within their existing protocol."

The Lee County Tax Collector's Office is working diligently to serve customers despite system issues; however, customers seeking driver's license services may experience delays or extended wait times.

Tax Collector Noelle Branning says: "Issuing a driver's license is an essential service we provide to the community. We understand the negative impact that disruptions to the FLHSMV system are having on our customers and we have hope a solution is identified quickly."

The Lee County Tax Collector's Office is monitoring the situation with FLHSMV and expects to resume normal operations when these issues are resolved. In the meantime, customers can follow FLHSMV on Twitter (@FLHSMV) for system updates.

Now, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, or FLHSMV, is adding more modifications to the cards.

"To keep the credentials secure, the department went ahead and performed a redesign that allowed us to put nearly twice as many security features on the new card as on the old card," said Alexis Bakofsky, FLHSMV assistant director of communications. "Floridians have the most secure counter attack credential on the market."

The modified driver's licenses will include enhanced security features that better protect Florida residents from identity theft and driver's license fraud.

"You'll see the magnetic strip removed and the 2D barcode moved," says Bakofksy. "The most notable feature is the touch security feature on the bottom right of the front of the card."

This addition, a raised bump, will help law enforcement officers and others, such as security or TSA officials, quickly verify whether an ID is valid or not.

In addition to the license changes, the Department of Homeland Security has issued an October 1, 2020 deadline for all identification to be REAL ID compliant.

To make sure your current driver's license or ID card is REAL ID compliant, look for a gold star in the upper right corner. If you don't see one, you'll need to go to a driver's license service center or tax collection office to get a new ID. Bakofsky said the new IDs will be available at all driver's license service centers and tax collectors statewide and online by the end of August.

According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, previously issued driver's licenses and identification cards can still be used until they expire. Badges with the old design and magnetic stripe will be completely phased out from March 2027.

"We've been working closely with the Florida Retail Association and other partners to ensure they have this updated information," Bakofsky said.
