For men, shaving their heads on the first day of Navy boot camp has been the first step in a rite of passage for decades when entering the Navy.
Women, too, are required to have their hair cut on the first day so that their hair is at a regular length, equal to a uniform collar. Also, because long hair and even combing their hair - as was allowed on board - was not allowed for recruits.
But the days of these old traditions may be numbered, first for women and possibly later for men.

The women's enlistment news comes as the Navy begins a three-month pilot program at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois, and no longer requires haircuts by Officer Training Command in Newport, Rhode Island. A similar measure is being considered for men, which, if enacted, would end the decades-long ritual required for women.

They, too, may only need a haircut that keeps them within current Navy grooming standards. After the initial head shave, all enlisted men's haircuts during recruitment or basic officer training are only required to meet current Service Navy grooming standards, a recommendation to ensure they end up with a regulatory haircut.
Final approval has yet to come for any men's ball pilot program, and there is no set schedule, officials said, but it is on the table.
"We are currently looking at the feasibility and logistics of a male pilot haircut, which would require men to have a regulatory haircut of their choice," said NSTC spokesman Lt. Matthew Comer in The Navy Times. "Once we determine the feasibility and cost of training a male pilot to cut his hair, we will move forward with planning."
When asked if employers could choose to shave their heads upon reaching the current 1/8-inch standard, Comer replied: "Trimming hair to 1/8-inch would certainly fall within that standard."

Jacksonville, Fla. - In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Chief Executive Officer of the Naval Exchange Service Command ordered the closure of all NEX barber and beauty shops, with only one exception.
On Monday (March 23), NEX barber and beauty shops worldwide were ordered to close for 24 hours. One exception is the barber shop at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, IL. It will remain open to ensure that US jobs. The Navy will continue to have access to haircuts.
According to NEXCOM Public Affairs, NEXCOM will follow OPM and DoD guidance for its personnel, placing all affected colleagues on "administrative leave" status for 14 days. All associates will be paid their current wages for these 14 days.
"At NEXCOM, we will continue to strictly follow all guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the safety and care of our patrons and associates," said Rear Adm.
