The Alia-250 is an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft being developed by Beta Technologies, an electric aircraft startup based in Vermont, USA.
Alia Aircraft
The Alia-250, unveiled in June 2020, will be available in both passenger and cargo versions. This project involved three years of planning and development. Electric aircraft can take off and land vertically before transitioning to long-range flight.
Beta's Alia Evtol Completes 200+ Mile Flight Test
Beta Technologies was founded in 2017 with the goal of developing a battery-powered aircraft with vertical takeoff and landing capabilities. The company developed the Alia-250 design based on the experience gained from the successful test flights of Ava, the first manned prototype aircraft.
A prototype of the new aircraft under development flew to the company's headquarters in March 2021 from Plattsburgh, New York.
The design of the Alia-250 is inspired by the Arctic Tern, the longest migratory bird in the world. It uses a bird's tail and wing mode configuration, which allows polar birds to make long-range flights to provide similar performance.
With a wingspan of 50 feet, the aircraft has a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 6,000 pounds (2,721 kg). The passenger version of this aircraft can carry six passengers, including a pilot, while the cargo version has 200 ft³ of space.
Us Army Evaluates Alia Electric Aircraft
Effective aerodynamic features of eVTOL aircraft include arched wings, tapered wingtips and corner trusses. The V-shaped tail is expected to reduce drag and improve low-speed stability.
The Alia-250 is powered by a distributed electric direct drive system and powered by sealed battery packs. The aircraft has four horizontally mounted rotors that provide vertical lift and a rear propeller to propel the aircraft forward. Fixed rotors reduce the complexity of the eVTOL aircraft, as well as reduce manufacturing costs, reduce the need for aircraft maintenance and increase safety.
The air-cooled electric motors powering the Alia-250 are internally designed to provide high torque density and redundancy while increasing efficiency. Manufactured with high precision and process control, the lift and thrust motors are fully customized and allow the aircraft to fly long distances.
The eVTOL aircraft will have custom batteries under the cabin to ensure a low center of gravity and protect it from turbulence.
Alia 250 Flies 1,400 Mile On New Charging Network
The battery can be charged in 50 minutes using Beta's fast charging system, which can be used as a stand-alone device to enable airport operation or integrated into a charging base for off-airport applications.
The 480V AC fast charging system provides three phases at 60Hz with 450A AC current and 350kV continuous power. It offers a battery charging range of up to 950V DC, with a continuous charging current of 350A and a boost charging current of 500A. The range of this electric plane is about 463 km and it can travel at a speed of 270 km per hour.
United Therapeutics, an American biotechnology company involved in the development of artificial organs, is the launch customer for Alia-250. This company plans to use this plane to distribute human organs. United Parcel Service (UPS), along with its subsidiary UPS Flight Forward, agreed in March 2021 to purchase 10 Alia-250 aircraft from Beta Technologies, with an option to purchase up to 150 aircraft. This aircraft, which is to be delivered to UPS, will have a capacity of 635 kg, a range of 402 km and a cruise speed of 274 km/h. The first delivery of the Alia-250 aircraft is expected in 2024.
